SHELL STITCH BABY AFGHAN

Size:38x56 inches
Materials needed: Crochet hook size G, baby sport yarn (acrylic) 16oz pink, 16oz white
Directions: With pink, ch 163.
Row 1: 2dc in 4th ch from hook, *skip 2 ch, 1sc in next ch, skip 2 ch, 5dc in next ch*, Repeat from * to * until 3 ch remain, skip 2ch, 1 sc in last ch. Ch 3, turn.
Row 2: 2dx in the first sc,*1 sc in the 3rd dc of 5 dc group, 5dc in sc *. Repeat from * to *, end row with 1 sc in 3rd chain of previous row.
Rows 3-7: Repeat row 2.
Rows 8-14: With white, repeat row 2.
Continue alternating colors every 7 rows until blanket measures 56"
Edging:
Row1: With pink, sc around edge.
Row 2: *4sc,ch 3, 1 sc in the same st of last sc, skip 1 st*.
Repeat from * to *, finish with sl st in first sc.

Make a Fleece Blanket (or quilt) into a Pillow Quilt:
Cut out two pieces of fabric and one piece of batting approximately 18 1/2” square (Smaller if your blanket isn’t very big - pocket should be about a third the width of the blanket). Put fabric right sides together and place batting on top of fabric. Sew all the way around (with batting on bottom), leaving an opening of 4” - 5” on one side to turn (this is the same method used for making quilts envelope style. Some quilters call this birthing a quilt).
Trim corners of the pocket and turn right side out. Stitch opening closed. Quilt two or three lines of quilting to hold batting in place.
Place pocket at end of blanket & stitch to blanket on three sides (see diagram). A zigzag stitch is more durable.
Fold blanket into thirds - pocket will be on top, then fold blanket up and insert into pocket as you turn the pocket inside out.

The following methods of finishing a FLEECE BLANKET will result in a Blanket that looks nice and will be a comfortable blanket for a child to snuggle with.
Suggestion: If you do use two pieces of fleece tied together by knotting the fringe, please don't tie the knots too tightly - it draws the fleece up like a bowl or basket instead of a flat blanket.
Do not cut the fringe any longer than 2" - 4". Longer fringe tangles in medical instruments and tubes. Also, the longer you make the fringe, the less blanket area there is for snuggling.

BASIC ENVELOPE STYLE QUILT:
Place two pieces of "Kids print 100% cotton" or "flannel" fabric, right sides together, with batting (any type) cut to size on bottom. (No "70's-type double knit fabric, wool, or upholstery fabric, please.)
Pin all 4 edges leaving a 10" opening to turn in the center of one edge. Sew 1/2" seam around all edges (leaving 10" opening.)
Turn and pin open edge closed. Top stitch around entire edge of quilt (approximately 1 "foot width" from edge). Make sure the top stitching "catches & closes" the open edge.
QUILT MAY BE FINISHED IN A VARIETY OF WAYS:
Quilts may be tied, machine quilted, hand quilted, or a simple square stitched in the center. Overall machine or hand quilting as well as tying is acceptable as well.
